Sony Minidisc Love

Post by kezla »

If there's one thing I love, it's physical media. You know, the shit the rights holders can't restrict your usage of?

These days, with everyone locked into streaming and paying suscription fees, it's even more valuable to hold physical media. To have the media you love, in your possession. To OWN it. I've been sailing the high sea's of the interweb since the early 2000's, using Limewire, KaZaa, Azerus, etc. Grabbing torrents from whereever I could, the old Kickass Torrents, Pirate Bay, whatever. And I still am, though I use different sites now, it's still the same game.

That said, I still need a way to play my music at home, in the car, or on the go. There's lots of ways I could achieve this digitally, but they all have their downsides. My phone has no headphone jack, so I cant use my good Audio Technica headphones. My work radio has no cd player, so id need an mp3 player to plug into it, or to use bluetooth which I prefer not to due to reduced fidelity. My car came with an aftermarket touchscreen (ew!) head unit without cd player and again, I prefer to avoid bluetooth in general. At home I have more options (including a minidisc deck), but still find myself switching between formats depending where I am and what im listening to.

That's when I realized there could be one format to rule them all, Minidisc! Now, what I am saying is a bit hyperbolic and of course my personal personal opinion, but I am rewinding the (cruel) hands of time and breaking out my old minidisc gear.

Now, as I said I have a minidisc component system at home, so I'm set there, but one thing thats really been bugging the absolute shit outta me is the music setup in my car. The android auto touchstreen system sucks! It doesn't always register my touches and the bluetooth or my phone keeps dropping connection. Imagine you're rapping along to your favorite Ludacris song and the connection drops right at the best part!! WTF!?!

So I went into my basement and rooted around for what felt like an eternity until I found my old Minidisc head unit! Victory! I had to order an install kit and go to the junkyard to pull a factory radio (needed the bracket), but here's whats going into my car

Bonus is I drive a 2000's honda civic, so this gem is period correct!

In this thread I will share more of the minidisc gear I own, as well as talk about it and hope anyone else who comes across this will join in.

Minidisc for life, yo!
